Cops: Cabbie mowed down tow-lot worker

UPPER DARBY - An irate cab driver ran over a Tow Squad employee after his taxi was towed from the McDonald's lot on 69th Street, according to police.

Jaspar Singh, 37, of the first block of Hurley Court, Millbourne, became one of hundreds of motorists whose vehicle was towed off the fast-food restaurant's parking lot in the last couple of months.
Patrolman Frank Guille responded to a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle at the Tow Squad impoundment lot on the 6700 block of Market Street about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

According to Guille, Singh had entered the lot and attempted to leave without paying the towing fees.
"Singh exited the lot at a high rate of speed and struck Thomas Anthony, causing injuries to his back, legs and hands," Guille wrote in the affidavit, noting Singh fled without rendering aid and was picked up later.
Singh is facing charges of reckless endangerment, assault, theft, hit and run, and reckless driving.
Anthony, 63, of Philadelphia, was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania for treatment.

"This was vigilante justice in the eyes of the cabbie," police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said. "Regardless of how angry somebody gets after having their car towed they can't take the law into their own hands. He went over to get his car and almost kills a Tow Squad employee driving out of the property. I understand McDonald's position but Tow Squad guys are like vultures."

"Now his cab was towed by Upper Darby police and I doubt he'll get it back because it was used as an instrument of crime," Chitwood said.
